The Attorney General and Minister for Economy Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum gave an overview of the 2017-2018 National Budget at a post budget forum organised by Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation in Suva this afternoon.
The A-G spoke on various incentives provided by Government, the debt level and the level spending dedicated to capital projects resulting in better infrastructure.
The business community questioned the A-G on the direction of the economy, on the source of funding for Government programmes and the policies channelled towards boosting businesses.
The A-G explained the revenue generating measures of Government and the reason of the fiscal deficits over the years where a substantial amount was dedicated to capital works.
He said in the coming financial year, the Government has “savings in excess of $750 million” and this “reduces the need to borrow”.
Furthermore, Fiji’s debt to gross domestic product ratio in comparison to deficit was quite low.
